PREFACE
Originally, the purpose of this thesis was to fulfill my university requirement to receive a masters degree in international relations. However, upon its completion, I am of the notion that it could be useful to many people, who like me, did not fully understand the subject of the Belize/Guatemala territorial dispute. Perhaps, because there has never been one complete document that combines all the historical treaties with the present-day initiatives to resolve the dispute, there has been a lack of understanding and appreciation of the subject. This document attempts to combine the two and also urges one to understand and respect other's cultures, history, identity and sovereignty, but above all, understand the need to cooperate and exchange trade and commerce, tourism, education, culture etc. Then, and only then, can we be model countries in the region prepared to meet all the challenges which await us in the 21st Century.
