Mountain Pine Ridge ( off-road driving) The largest and oldest of Belize's national parks. With an extensive network of waterfalls, white-water rivers and sweeping views. Visit the 1000 ft Falls, the tallest waterfall in Central America; the Rio Frio Cave, once used by the Mayans as a ceremonial center. Swim in the cooling pools of the Rio On as it cascades over the granite boulders. Bring swimsuit, flashlight, sunscreen and insect repellent. Price :1-4 people : $180.00 5-8 people : $45.00 each Price includes admission fees Caracol Accessible only by 4-wheel drive vehicle, and located deep in the Chiquibul Forest, Caracol is the most extensive Mayan center in the country. On the way drive through pine forest and into rainforest. The high canopy rainforest is home to several species of cat, as well as such rare birds as the keel-billed motmot and the ocellated turkey. If also visiting cave & pools , bring swimsuit and flashlight. Xunantunich Once a ceremonial center in the Mayan classical period, with a spectacular view from the top of the main pyramid. The frieze on the eastern wall of the pyramid is one of the finest Mayan sculptures in Belize. This tour can also be combined with a tour of Ix-Chel Farm, a research facility specializing in the healing properties of plants, and the Natural History Museum & Butterfly farm. Topoxte/Yaxha, Guatemala These two important Mayan archaeological sites are located on the Yaxha Lagoon, just an hour's drive over the Guatemalan border. Upon arrival, board a cayuco (motorized canoe) to visit Topoxte, located on an island in the lake. This has just recently been restored to show how the Maya lived and protected themselves on the island. After lunch, transfer to Yaxha considered to be the third largest city of the Maya world. End the tour atop Temple 216 to view the jungle and lakes of Yaxha and Sacnab. This tour includes lunch at El Sombrero Lodge on the banks of the lagoon. Barton Creek Cave An exciting canoe trip traveling two miles deep into the remote Cave, once used by the Mayans as a burial site, and ceremonial purposes. The cave is adorned with stalactites and stalagmites. Mayan potteries and skeletons can be observed by flashlight. En-route to the cave you will drive through the traditional village of Upper Barton Creek. Bring flashlight and swimsuit. *Macal River Canoe Trip Travel by canoe observing a rainforest full of orchids, bromeliads and vines as well as iguanas, the rare howler monkey and many species of birds. St. Herman's Cave & Blue Hole National Park St Herman's Cave was used by the Maya during the Classic Period. The concrete steps leading into its mouth are laid over stone steps carved more than 1000 years ago. From the cave is a 45-minute hike by a Nature Trail to the Blue Hole, a cool turquoise pool surrounded by mosses and lush vegetation. Ideal spot for a cool dip and bird watching. Sunrise in the Rainforest (Three hours) Take your mount as the sun rises over the pine forest. The first light is an ideal time to observe a kaleidoscope of colorful birds under a rainforest canopy of vines, palms and exotic bromeliads. Look carefully and you may spy a whitetail deer, coatimundi or grey fox. Brilliant butterflies and a chorus of birdsong make this the ideal start to a day at Blancaneaux. Sunset Tour ( Three hours) Begin your ride as the heat of the day begins to cool off. Ride trails through the pine forest and meadows, climbing to a higher point to watch the sun set behind the Maya Mountains. Full Day Tour Following trails through the Pine Ridge, the terrain transforms from pine forest to rainforest. Suddenly you're in a clearing with a spectacular view over the valley where you can see Mennonite villages - enclaves where life is lived at a simpler pace.
