ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Of all BETA's accomplishments, the greatest has been the Adopt a Roadway "Beta No Litta" project which began during the summer of 1995 and culminated on Earth Day 1996 under the leadership of then Executive Director, Ms. Linda Munoz and Immediate Past President, Mick Fleming.

Grossly understaffed and underfunded, the project was able to recruit adopters from Corozal to the Benque border to the picturesque village of Placencia. The adopters agreed to "adopt" a stretch of Belizean roadway and take responsibility for keeping it free of litter throughout the year. We are pleased to report that the project has been highly successful in increasing the awareness of litter and garbage disposal and is evidenced by several other "anti-litter" projects which have been instigated by other organizations and communities since Adopt a Roadway began.

Out of our small home office, BETA received nationwide coverage through various radio talk shows, television public service announcements and numerous newspaper articles. We are please to say that the total in-kind contribution of more than BZ $70,000 exceeded the funding by NARMAP (Natural Resource Management Project) which totaled BZ $65,000.

This community outreach program promoting a "clean and green" Belize continues to move forward. During the weekend of October 26 and 27, BETA members embarked on the second of its bi-annual clean-up campaigns across Belize in which adopters, individuals, and school and community groups were asked to come out in full force to keep Belize's roadways litter free.

Jim Bevis, President of BETA, explains the successes of the clean up campaign earlier this year by saying, "The program owes its success to BETA adopters who came out during the first clean up on Earth Day. Most of them have since been returning to their two mile stretch of highway to make sure that it stays clean." He also attributed the success to the schools, community groups, and the individuals who volunteered their time to work along with the adopters to clean up the roadways. "Belizeans of all ages, sizes, and character would be seen cleaning up our highways... from Placencia to Corozal, we had a very good showing from the public who made a meaningful contribution."
