OVERVIEW

Belize entered the world of offshore financial services in the early nineties with the passing of the International Business Companies Act in 1990. This Act permits the incorporation of IBCs which do not attract any form of taxation, and which give to beneficial owners anonymity. The Act is user-friendly and the IBC registry efficient.

The Registration of Merchant Ships Act was passed in 1989 and established a modern ships registry for Belize. The registry permits efficient registration of vessels and has designated offices throughout the world.

By Act 11 of 1991 the Estate Duty Act was repealed thereby abolishing estate duty on assets of persons who died after the 1st April, 1991.

In 1992 came the Trusts Act which contains the most secure asset protection provisions to be found anywhere in the world. Now spendthrift trusts may be created, income may be accumulated for up to 120 years, and exempt trusts are free from taxation.
